[03 June 2012] Iran hosts international confab on Imam Khomeini - English Thinkers and scholars from 60 world countries have taken part in the conference. Iran has hosted an international conference to discuss ethics and politics from the viewpoint of the late Imam Khomeini. The conference comes as Iran is preparing to mark the 23rd anniversary of the demise of late founder of the Islamic Republic of Iran, Imam Khomeini on June 3. Thinkers and scholars from different world countries have already arrived in Tehran to commemorate the occasion. Thinkers believe that the teachings of Imam Khomeini will continue to inspire Muslims around the world in the years to come. Imam Khomeini, who overthrew the Shah regime back in 1979 and established the Islamic Republic believed that the keys to the victory of the Islamic revolution were the faith in God, reliance on the people and unity in words and action. Imam Khomeini died on June 3, 1989.

The Iranian Revolutionary Guards Corps, (IRGC) along with Aerospace Force have introduced a new laser beam guiding missile. The missile is has a range of 5 kilometers and is named Dehlaviye after the city where Mostafa Chamran an Iranian scientist who served as first Defense Minister of post-revolutionary Iran was martyred in the Iran-Iraq war. This new laser beam guided missile can target low flying objects and ground targets. Iran's Defense Minister Brigadier General Ahamd Vahidi told Press TV this latest laser technology has received international recognition and has put Iran amongst the few countries worldwide with the capability of producing such a device. Brig. Gen. Vahidi also explained that Iran is fully capable of defending itself against enemies. This latest product of Iran's military is that it is also an anti-armored missile with an anti-jamming station.

Hassan Rohani\'s Biography The newly-elected Iranian president was born into a religious family on November 13, 1948 in the city of Sorkheh in Semnan Province. Rohani started his religious education in 1960 at Semnan Seminary. One year later, he moved to the holy city of Qom. In 1969, he was admitted into Tehran University and received his BA in law after three years. Rohani earned his MA and PhD in law from Glasgow Caledonian University. Rohani was involved in the struggle against the Pahlavi regime as a young man. After the late Imam Ruhollah Khomeini\'s return from exile in France in 1979, Rohani was politically active in Europe. He held question-and-answer sessions with students in Britain and France. Rohani was elected to parliament following the establishment of the Islamic Republic and served as a lawmaker for five consecutive terms until 2000. He held positions such as deputy Majlis Speaker and head of the Defense and Foreign Policy committees. During the 1980-1988 Iraqi imposed war, Rohani served as member of the High Council of Defense, commander of the Iran Air Defense and deputy commander-in-chief of the Armed Forces. Rohani currently represents Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei in the Supreme National Security Council, and is member of the Expediency Council and the Assembly of Experts. He is also President of the Expediency Council\'s Center for Strategic Research. Rohani speaks fluent English, Arabic and Persian and has written nearly 100 books and articles as well as conducting 700 different research projects.

On June 25 a number of important players will meet in Dakar to discuss issues related to the International Criminal Court. Senegal is one of many African states that were early supporters of the court as an institution to make a decisive push in the fight against impunity. Participants at the discussion in include high-level representatives from a number of French-speaking African countries. Lebanese nationals who were held captive by insurgents in Syria now talk about their ordeal. One of them has described the captors as inhuman. Abbas and ten other Lebanese nationals were snatched by militants in Syria as they were returning from a visit to religious sites in Iran in 2012. He says the kidnappers constantly tormented them during the 17-month detention. The man says the psychological abuse they suffered at the hands of the hostage takers was even worse than the physical torture. Another ex-hostage says the captors kept telling lies to them about their fate to mentally torture them. The hostages arrived in Beirut on Saturday and were greeted by cheerful crowds.

In Qatar, a top court upholds a 15-year jail term for a poet who criticized Arab regimes in the Persian Gulf for crushing pro-democracy protests. Qatar\'s Court of Cassation confirmed the sentence given to Muhammad Ibn al-Dheeb al-Ajami by an appeals court in February. The ruling is the final verdict from the highest court in the country. His lawyer has described the sentence as a political decision. Ajami was arrested in November 2011 and is accused of insulting the Emir of Qatar. Ajami\'s poem criticizes the ruling families for being dependent on US forces for the glory of their country instead of relying on their own people. Qatar is home to a major US military base.

A lawyer for a nine-eleven suspect, who\'s jailed in the US Guantanamo prison, criticizes his limitations in even talking about the torture of his client. James Connell says the Guantanamo court has barred him from reading out his client\'s personal account of his alleged abuse. He says this hampers his ability to put up a strong defense. To add insult to the injury, Connell said he was also prevented to send the document to a third party such as the U-N\'s special rapporteur on torture. The lawyer insisted that the treatment violated the U-N Convention Against Torture. Other lawyers have also complained about the issue, saying it\'s important to discuss torture claims because all their five defendants face the death penalty if convicted.
