They cried and beat their chests in mourning for the loss of Imam Hussein, the Prophet Muhammad's grandson.
Hussein was killed in 680 AD along with his supporters by the army of the caliph Yazid in the Iraqi city of Karbala.
And ever since, Shia Muslims especially have commemorated the event by reliving the pain and sorrow endured by Hussain and his family.
The congregation was told that the events of Karbala are still relevant today in 21st century Britain.
And they were reminded that Imam Hussain sacrificed his own life in the cause of justice.
Later, a well attended march was held in central London, despite it being the middle of the working week and the miserable weather.
As you can see behind me thousands of Shia Muslims are marching through central London to commemorate the martyrdom of Imam Hussain, the Prophet Muhammad's grandson. And according to them, the message of this day is the duty of all Muslims to stand up against tyranny and oppression.
The marchers told me that the message of Ashura is particularly relevant in a world where Muslims are still being oppressed. And where sectarianism is being promoted by some parties.
They vowed to learn the lessons from this momentous day and to implement them in their lives.

These scenes outside the Israeli Embassy in London have become a common sight. It is here that London witnessed an outpouring of grief over the attack on the Mavi Marmara earlier this year, and here people now stand to commemorate the anniversary of Operation Cast Lead in Gaza, which began to this day two years ago.
Over 1400 Gazans were killed in that onslaught - few have forgotten. Protests like this are taking place around the country this week.
2010 comes to a close after months of brewing anger over the British government's domestic austerity measures - this is matched by equally heightened disillusionment over the Middle East process.
Two years ago as Gaza was being bombarded, protests here turned violent - and dozens were later arrested and given jail sentences. This sent shockwaves through the Pro-Palestinian movement here.
The protest in London has come to an end now and the organisers and fairly happy with the turnout they saw today. The end of December is a sleepy, holiday season in the United Kingdom - a time when very little of political significance takes place here but with Operation Cast lead's anniversary falling at this time each year, it will never be the same again. Every year on the last Friday of Ramadan, Muslims commemorate al-Quds day and show their solidarity with the people of Palestine. The Palestinian cause is an indisputable aspiration shared by almost every Muslim in the world, regardless of their national, lingual and sectarian diversities. Their wish to liberate Palestine and al-Quds from the Zionists goes beyond all their differences. This year's al-Quds day, in the aftermath of revolutions and political turbulences in the Muslim and Arab world, and in the prospect of sectarian conflicts and civil wars ignited by the western powers, is a unique opportunity to forget all differences, to use the spiritual and liberating experience of Ramadan and to come together as brothers and sisters.
Muslims traditionally tend to ignore the material life and worldly pleasures and to restrain themselves from any dispute during the month of Ramadan. This week's Islam and Life asks: How important is the international Al-Quds day for Muslim unity? An interview with Sayyed Ali Raza Rizvi.

Marking the World MS Day; Iran\\\'s M. S. Society has held a ceremony to commemorate the World MS Day to focus attention on the disease which damages the body\\\'s nerve system. World MS Day is the only global awareness raising campaign for the disease. Every year Iran for its part launches such a campaign to provide the public with information about MS and how it affects the lives of people often between 20-40 years old. The uneven distribution of MS worldwide has been the subject of investigation over the last few decades. Although the main cause of MS is still unclear, genetic susceptibility as well as other factors including age, latitude, trauma, gender, pregnancy, race, viral infections and psychological and behavioral factors have been studied.

Massive rallies are underway across Iran on International Quds Day in support of the Palestinian resistance against the Israeli regime.
Millions of Iranians from all walks of life took to the streets nationwide on Friday in solidarity with the oppressed Palestinian nation, voicing their anger at the policies of the Israeli regime and its allies and calling for the liberation of Palestine.
The Iranian marchers are carrying placards and chanting slogans against the United States and Israel. Millions of other people from more than 80 other countries will also be holding rallies to commemorate the event.
On Thursday, Iran’s Foreign Ministry called on the Iranian nation as well as Muslim nations and freedom-seekers across the world to take part in International Quds Day rallies to show their opposition to the Israeli regime.
In a statement, the ministry said that the clear message conveyed by the Palestinian resistance and the Islamic Awakening in the Middle East is that the only way to save the Palestinian nation is for the Palestinian people and leaders to remain united and stand up to the occupying Israeli regime.
It also emphasized that the root cause of the Middle East crises is the continuation of the occupation of Palestine and of Israeli brutalities.

Al-Ghadir Day has been commemorated in the Yemeni capital by Shia community, who believe that on this day Prophet Muhammed (PBUH) appointed his cousin and son-in-law Ali Ibn Abi Taleb (AS) as the leader of Muslims more than fourteen centuries ago in the prophet\'s farewell speech.
Prominent members of the Houthi community who spoke at the podium, said, that Al-Ghadir day is one of the most important events to occur in Islamic history- in which Ali ibn Abi Taleb (AS) was dignified and givev elevated status by God, the Almighty.
The Houthi religious leader Abdul-Malik al Houthi also addressed the gathering via video conferencing from the north province of Sa\'ada. In his 40 minute speech, the Houthi leader highlighted the pressing issues facing the Muslim world. He said he believes the reason for chaos across the Islamic world- is their leaders who often seek protection and assistance from those he referred to as enemies of Islam.
Houthis in Yemen say they look to commemorate Al-Ghadir Day every year by calling on all Muslim nations to relinquish dependency on the West.
The Day of Al-Ghadir is significant in the Islamic history which is commemorated every year by Shia Muslims in Yemen. This is an auspicious day which many believe brought about the completion of the holy religion of Islam more than fourteen centuries ago.
