The topic of this edition of Press TV's Islam and Life is the portrayal of Muslim schools in the UK's media. The guest, Ibrahim Lawson from the Association of Muslim Schools UK, thinks that there is a negative portrayal not only of Muslim schools but regarding all aspects of Muslim life in British media. He says the reason for this kind of portrayal is fear of Muslims and Islam and inaccurate information. He says there is no reason to fear British Muslim schools and says their curriculum is nearly the same as ordinary British schools.

A rise in the number of hate crimes against Muslims in London is being encouraged by main stream politicians and sections of the media, a study written by a former Scotland Yard counterterrorism officer suggests. Attacks ranging from death threats and murder to persistent low level assaults such as spitting and name-calling are done by extremists and sections in main stream society. This edition of Press TV's Islam and Life asks how Muslims should tackle hate crimes committed against them.

Iraq's long-suppressed Shia majority is in the ascendancy. Thousands of pilgrims flocked to a Baghdad shrine this week in a vibrant expression of religious identity that would not have been tolerated under the ruler of former dictator Saddam Hussein.

Amir Mehdi Kazemi, Press TV, Tehran These are familiar scenes nowadays in Iran as millions celebrate the birthday of Imam Mahdi the twelfth and the last Imam of Shiite Muslims. Every year streets and villages across Iran are illuminated on the fifteenth of the month of Sha'aban in the lunar calendar. Additionally special ceremonies are held in Iran's most religious cities Mashad, and Qom. Based on Shiite faith the twelfth Imam lives among his people but remains unknown until the day he reappears as a savior of mankind, filling the world with his blessings. According to the belief of Shiites and some Sunnis Imam Mahdi is hidden by God and will unite all Muslims at the time of his reappearance. They say that upon his arrival he will be accompanied by a number of holy men including Jesus Christ… During the night of the occasion the believers gather outside their homes. They fill the streets celebrating the event while seeking forgiveness and repenting to God, praying that their hidden Imam will rid the world of error, injustice and tyranny. The 15th of Sha'ban is also marked in other countries such as Pakistan, Afghanistan and India.

Maulana Ishaq is a learned scholar of Sunni school of thought. His focus is to clear up the confusions of Muslims. He uses Quran, history, and seerat of Prophet and his companions to prove his point. Maulana Ishaq has been instrumental in promoting religious tolerance. He is a strong proponent of Shia Sunni Unity.

The holy month's beginning is based on sighting of the moon which is usually confirmed by religious authorities. However in multicultural Ukraine, some Muslim communities go ahead with the date announced by their countries of origin and others follow the date of their country of residence. The holy days of Ramadan begin and end with the prayers. The evening prayer is followed by the fastbreaking iftar. In Ukraine Iftar menu is as multicultural as Ukrainian Muslims are. Fasting is intended to remind Muslims of self-discipline and self-restraint. During Ramadan, Muslims avoid from eating, drinking and smoking during the daylight. They have food twice a day, one before sun rises and the other after the sun set. Fasting in Ukraine has its own features, says this mufti. For instance the daylight length in the country may climb to 18 hours. Ukrainian Muslims also point to the high humidity of the climate which makes people feel the heat. However most Muslims in Ukraine don't see any problem in this This year Ukrainian Muslim communities invited muftis from Saudi Arabia and Egypt to perform readings during Ramadan. The holy month will be also marked by charities and sharing food with the needy.
