Concerned about the devastation currently being inflicted on the people of Lebanon and Palestine by the Israeli Military Forces and with the very limited and biased reporting on these conflicts presented by most American media networks - students organized a teach-in on the UC Berkeley campus in order to give students faculty and the Bay Area community at large achance to gain a greater understanding of these events and to participate in an open discussion on their significance for both Americans and the people of the Middle East. During the first hour of this two-hour event four scholars with expertise in the Middle East presented short analyses - 15 minutes each - of the historical and political dimensions of this conflict focusing on the following themes. 1. The role US foreign policy has played in enabling and authorizing the Israeli bombardment 2. The origins and historical development of Hezbollah and the role of this movement within Lebanese social and political arenas 3. The shifting political alignments within Israel and their relation to the current war on Lebanon and to Israels role in the region more broadly 4. The impact of Israeli military actions in Gaza and the West Bank on the lives of Palestinians and the political landscape of the Palestinian society. The presentations were followed by audience questions and comments which is what this video is about. Speakers in the first part included Judith Butler Beshara Doumani Charles Hirschkind Saba Mahmood Zeina Zaatari The teach-in took place on September 7th 2006. Charles Hirschkind sheds light on the utility of the war on terror for the US empire. He argues that - instead of targeting Al-Qaeda - the war on terror is more focused on targeting anti-imperial movements in certain Muslim countries and protecting pro-US dictatorial regimes. In a cautious tone he also emphasizes the importance of understanding the context in which violent tactics of certain resistance organizations should be understood. The viewer may not agree with everything he has to say. I for one do not. But there are some useful insights that we can surely appreciate. This clip is from a Berkeley teach-in organized in Sep 2006. Checkout more clips from this event on this site or on google video.

Zeina Zaatari starts with sharing some quotes from her interviews in Lebanon in 2001. She then presents a history of Lebanese-Israeli relationship. Argues that Hezbollah - although supported by Iran-Syria - is very much a Lebanese phenomenon. Talks about Syed Musa Sadrs involvement - formation of Amal - Syed Fadlallahs role in educational activities and his perceived connections to Hezbollah - and finally she comes to the formation of Hezbollah. Her description of Vilayate Faqih may not be fully accurate but that shouldnt distract one from the main theme of her talk. She describes Hezbollahs organizational capacity social welfare projects outreach avenues - all of which were targets of Israels bombardment in Summer 2006. She also describes the dynamics of Hezbollahs influence among its following. Although she warns against seeing these dynamics in instrumental terms - she still focuses on clientalism and does not give sufficient value to identity attachments and religious commitments of the followers among the Shias and support from well-wishers among the general Lebanese population and beyond Lebanon. This clip is from a Berkeley teach-in organized in Sep 2006. Checkout more clips from this event on this site.

Anti war protestors demonstrated in front of the White House and brought more than just signs they brought shoes
WASHINGTON, Dec 17: About 100 people gathered outside the White House on Wednesday to protest for the release of the Iraqi journalist who hurled his shoes at President George W. Bush over the weekend.
Muntazer al-Zaidi, who works for the Al Baghdadia Television, has been in custody since disrupting President Bush’s weekend press conference with the size-10 projectiles. If convicted, Mr Zaidi may be jailed for up to seven years.
The protesters brought a giant head of President Bush, threw shoes at it and covered it with shoes before ending their protest.
They also brought bags of shoes representing Iraqis and US soldiers who have died since the Bush Administration’s “illegal invasion” of Iraq.
The peace activists urged the Iraqi government to release Mr Zaidi without charges and have set up a fund to support him and his family.
At the White House, Press Secretary Dana Perino said the president had “no hard feelings” about the Iraqi journalist who flung shoes at him.
Asked if Mr Zaidi should be forgiven, Ms Perino said Mr Bush trusted Iraq’s legal system to decide an appropriate punishment for the assault.
The protesters outside the White House also displayed names of thousands of Iraqis killed in the war. The display contained their names, ages, places where they were killed and how they were killed.
“These are real people,” said Gael Murphy, one of the cofounders of the Code Pink which along with three of the groups had participated in the protest. “They were killed because of the US invasion.”Later, representatives for Code Pink, Women for Peace, Iraq Veterans Against the War, and Veterans for Peace told a news conference that they had come to White House to remind the Bush administration and the American people that “Mr Bush is directly responsible for the deaths of 1.5 million Iraqis and 4,200 US troops”.
They noted that the war also displaced more than five million Iraqis.
“Bush is the real criminal, not al-Zaidi,” said one of them. “Al-Zaidi speaks for millions of people across the world.”
“Arrest Bush, not Zaidi,” chanted the protesters as they marched outside the White House. “Bush is a war criminal,” shouted the protesters as they spanked a giant picture of the US president with shoes.
The speakers who addressed the news conference noted that Mr Zaidi had become something of a folk-hero in the Arab world, and his shoe-throwing had become a symbol of dissatisfaction with ‘Bush’s bungled war in Iraq’

Eye opening montage of news clips and photos that tell the truth about the events in Gaza. Courtesy -whatreallyhappened.com --Strategically speaking Israel does not have much time left in the ongoing conflict. Consider that it chose the timing of the current aggression very carefully-when the administration in the White House is in transition - the potentially most radical segment of the population in America - the students - are away from campuses and could not be mobilized easily and the general public in America - and elsewhere - are still recovering from the Christmas and New Year celebrations- and are also preoccupied with the economic recession. Still to the Israeli surprise regular protests with huge turn outs have been occurring in the US and around the world stripping off the deceptive cover of being so-called peaceful democratic and civilized from Israel-s face. The protests and alternative media sources deserve much credit in this regard. What is important to understand here is that if we are just demanding a ceasefire it is already part of Israel-s strategy in this conflict. There are good chances that Israel will end its aggression within a week before the new administration assumes office in the White House or the latest by the February 10 elections in Israel. Israel also knows that most people come out for protest only in reaction. Once the aggression ends the protests will subside and the new White House administration would not be pressed to issue a drastic statement. And that is only to the extent of issuing a statement- something on the line that Israel should observe RESTRAINT. The Bush administration did not bother to do even that much. Given the team of pro-Israel Hawkish-Pragmatists that Obama has assembled in his cabinet - if that is any indicator - chances are very slim that we will see a significant policy shift immediately.-- For more information see gazaawareness.blogspot.com

Columbia University professor Mahmood Mamdani talks about his latest book on the Darfur Conflict and the shady Save Darfur movement. His book is called SAVIORS AND SURVIVORS. The talk was at UNCA. Continuing from the previous clips where Mamdani has argued that there were internal and external causes of violence. The fourth erroneous assumption according to him in understanding the conflict is that the level of violence was steady. That may not have been the case. The fifth problem or erroneous assumption is that the Save Darfur movement has removed the history from this conflict. It feeds masses with the death estimates and details of the atrocities but not the internal and external politics contexts. The whole conflict is turned into a simplistic morality tale where one side is the OPPRESSOR and the other OPPRESSED. The media also contributed to this effect. Mamdani argues that we can learn from the experiences of South Africa and Mozambique where there were no winners and no losers in the end and a ceasefire and political justice of sorts were achieved.
