The US and Russia have come to the conclusion that there is no military solution to Syria\'s crisis and all efforts must be focused on a political roadmap. Some US allies notably Saudi Arabia still insist President Bashar al Assad\'s government should be toppled militarily. Delayed for months, the Geneva Two peace conference aims to resolve the crisis through dialog between the Syrian government and a yet undecided opposition that includes al Qaeda-affiliated militants bent on continuing a deadly terrorist campaign. So how near is a political solution?

Syrians are witnessing yet another deadly day. At least 15 people have been killed in a car bomb blast in the capital.
Nine of those killed in the explosion have been civilians while the others are reported to be Syrian army forces. Over 30 people have also been injured. Local media say the blast took place when a bomber detonated a car packed with explosives in front of a bus stop in the Sumariyah district. The area in western Damascus is home to a complex-- housing families of soldiers fighting against foreign backed insurgents. Syria has seen a rise in such attacks since government forces escalated their mop-up operations to clear more areas of the foreign-backed militants.

Some say it\'s an important milestone pushing Egypt towards a new political era but others, notably among them the Muslim Brotherhood say the new draft constitution to be put to a referendum within months, is a step backwards especially since the new draft is seen as giving sweeping powers to the military and banning political parties based on religions. The US and Afghanistan are at loggerheads over a stalled security agreement that President Hamid Karzai has refused to sign despite increasing US pressure. The deal would allow between 12,000 to 14,000 troops, mostly American, to stay in Afghanistan beyond 2014. Under the pact, American forces would be able to enter Afghan homes as part of their operations and enjoy legal immunity, two of the most important sticking points. President Karzai suggests he\'s being bullied into signing an unfair pact.
Is Afghanistan best with or without this deal?
What would a permanent US stay in the country mean?

Now the territory\\\'s one-point-seven-million population are once more left to deal with the winter cold. This, after Israel shut down its only crossing to Gaza, known as Kerem Shalom. Gaza\\\'s power plant was on for only 12 days following a seven-week shutdown. The Israeli siege of the enclave has caused a lot of hardships for Palestinians there. The blockade has been in place since 2007 after Hamas took power in a democratic election. Tel Aviv has been defying international calls to lift its blockade, which is seen by many rights groups as illegal.
