US never apologizes for drone victims - 24 Jan 2013 - English

An analyst says the United States of America only offers a simple apology when Washington\'s assassination drones, which have recently been used on a daily basis, \'mistakenly kill\' innocent civilians.
The comment comes as Washington has been using its assassination drones in Yemen, Pakistan, Afghanistan, and Somalia, claiming that they target the terrorists. The attacks, however, have mostly led to massive civilian casualties.
This is while the US-imposed Yemeni President Abdu Rabu Mansour Hadi praised the American targeted killing bid across his country in a September visit to Washington.
\"They pinpoint the target and have zero margin of error, if you know what target you\'re aiming at,\" Hadi said at the Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars.
Press TV has conducted an interview with Hisham Jaber, Director of Center for Middle East Studies, to further discuss the issue.

A university professor tells Press TV that the US occupying forces attempt to manipulate any kind of information or reports of Afghanistan war casualties. Civilian casualties have long been a source of friction between the Afghan government and US-led foreign forces and have dramatically increased anti-US sentiments in Afghanistan. The United States and its allies invaded Afghanistan in 2001 under the pretext of combating terrorism. While the war removed the Taliban from power, insecurity continues to be high across the country.
Press TV has conducted an interview with Professor Shah Mahmoud Hanifi, from James Madison University (Virginia), to further discuss the issue of US war on terror in Afghanistan.

The City of Lincoln in the north of England. Scenic. Suburban. And suddenly a hub for Britain\'s war on terror. This week the government announced that it\'s now conducting drone attacks on Afghanistan from the base behind me - RAF Waddington - where 100 personnel are manning the hi-tech reaper drones carrying 500lb bombs and hellfire missiles. In response to the move, hundreds of anti-war demonstrators have marched through the city to the army site. Drone Expert Chris Coles agrees - that Britain is expanding its drone project - with the help of its friends. The government defends drones. It says they save lives. It will only admit to one civilian killing. But reality on the ground speaks differently.
UK insists its operations are only in Afghanistan - where British drones have flown about 45,000 hours and fired about 350 times.

he prospects of ending 12 years of pro-Taliban militancy through negotiations in Pakistan are dying down after a US drone attack killed Wali u Rehman Mehsud, the deputy chief of pro-Taliban militants controlling parts of the tribal region in the country\'s northwest.
In retaliation, the militants have said they will withdraw their earlier offer to hold talks with the incoming government of Muslim League- Nawaz Sharif. The pro-Taliban militants have slamed the government, in a reference to the country\'s military for conspiring to get their leader killed through a US drone strike.
Opposition parties are now mounting pressure on incoming Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif to order Pakistan\'s Air Force, after taking the oath of office next week, to shoot down US assassination drones operating in the country\'s tribal areas. Sharif\'s party seeks to convene a meeting of other political parties to decide on a joint course of action on how to deal with Washington\'s continued violation of Pakistan\'s sovereignty.

Twin explosions near the Iranian embassy in Lebanon\\\'s capital Beirut has claimed over a dozen lives, killing Iran\\\'s cultural attaché to Lebanon. This is the first occurrence of an embassy being targeted by terrorists, in what is believed to be a spillover from the war in neighboring Syria. In this debate, we\\\'ll discuss who would benefit from this, in which even though an Al Qaeda offshoot has claimed responsibility, many are pointing the finger to Israel and Saudi Arabia.

The shocking killing of Lee Rigby earlier this year by people believing themselves to be Muslims was predictably followed by weeks of media coverage.
Although such extremism is contradictory to Islam, Muslims felt it necessary to again denounce this extremism.
However, there was another victim of extremism shortly after, 82-year old Mohammed Saleem. He was stabbed three times until he died on his way home from prayers.
The extremist was Ukrainian student Pavlo Lapshyn, a man who also bombed several mosques in Britain.
British media has been comparably quiet. Was it because his beliefs were not expressed as Islamic?
This week\'s Islam and Life asks: Which victim of extremism will Britain remember: Lee Rigby or Mohammed Saleem?

The Iraqi government has established a fact-finding committee to probe the killing of at least 16 Iranian gas pipeline engineers and workers.
Iran\'s ambassador to Iraq Hassan Danaeefar says the committee was established based on an order by Prime Minster Nuri al-Maliki and is comprised of army commanders and intelligence officers. Iran\'s Foreign Ministry has strongly condemned the terrorist attack. On Friday, gunmen attacked workers at a gas pipeline project stretching from Iran into Iraq. 18 people, including 16 Iranians, lost their lives. Violence in Iraq has hit a five-year high since the beginning of this year. The United Nations estimates that at least eight-thousand people have been killed in 2013.

Indian army has ordered the court martial of six army soldiers, including two officers, for their involvement in the killings of three youths in a fake encounter in north Kashmir\'s Kupwara district back in April 2010. The army soldiers claimed the victims were militants but it was later found out that they were just three innocent civilians.
The incident sparked violent protests against the controversial Armed Forces Special Powers Act that gives unbridled power to army personnel in the region. More than 110 civilians were killed in protests that lasted several months back in 2010. Now, three years after the incident, rights activists are not optimistic about the outcome of the court martial proceedings. They say the court martial is just a cover-up because the accused enjoy the Armed Forces Special Powers Act. That act gives legal immunity to Indian forces in Kashmir and forbids their prosecution without the sanction from the Indian government. According to rights activists, hundreds of security personnel face charges of murder, rape, and arrest in Kashmir, but prosecution against them has been hindered due to the special powers. The army has ordered court martial proceedings against the accused army soldiers in Machil fake encounter. But it remains to be seen whether the real perpetrators of the crime will be brought to justice in the near future.

Pakistan launches new airstrikes against militant hideouts in the northwestern tribal region, killing at least 30 people.
Military officials say the latest strikes mainly took place in the Shawal valley and Datta-khel areas of North Waziristan. They say fifteen militants were killed in the South Waziristan side of the border, and another 12 in North Waziristan. Militants are using these areas as training compounds for their attacks. Pakistani fighter jets have been pounding targets in the region since the government\'s efforts to hold peace talks with pro-Taliban militants broke down this month. In recent days, people of North Waziristan have evacuated their villages, anticipating a full-scale military offensive.
