As outrage and condemnation continues over Israel's deadly attack on a flotilla carrying humanitarian aid to the Gaza Strip, Tel Aviv once again threatens to halt any ship trying to break the Gaza blockade. In a letter to the UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon, Israel's Ambassador to the UN Gabriela Shalev called for a halt to a new aid ship scheduled to set sail from Lebanon to break the siege of Gaza, warning that Tel Aviv would use "all necessary means" to stop the vessel. "Israel reserves its right under international law to use all necessary means to prevent these ships from violating the existing naval blockade imposed on the Gaza Strip," she said. The warning comes as a group of female Lebanese activists announced a plan to send an aid ship loaded with medical supplies to Gaza, which has been under siege since 2007. According to the organizers, 50 Lebanese and foreign activists would be aboard the aid ship. The new aid convoy planned the mission after Israeli commandos on May 31 stormed the Gaza Freedom Flotilla aid convoy, killing 20 civilian activists and injuring dozens of others. The Israeli envoy also claimed the aid ship was linked to the Lebanese resistance movement of Hezbollah. Hezbollah, however, has denied having any links to the mission, saying it would not join the convoy as it did not want to give Israel an excuse to attack the Gaza campaigners. The warning comes as earlier on Thursday, Israeli Defense Minister Ehud Barak warned Lebanon against allowing the aid ship to depart from Lebanon for Gaza.

It's the New Years here in Iran, and as the whole nation celebrates either at home or on the road, here at "Iran Today" we're reviewing the country's scientific achievements throughout the last year.
From nuclear technology to space exploration, Iran's academic community has been working hard to do the nation proud by the start of the New Year.
On the 8th of April 2011, Iran put its Comprehensive Scientific Plan in motion. By definition this plan is "a coordinated and dynamic collection of goals polices and requisite for planning the strategic evolution of science technology and innovation systems, based on Islamic/Iranian values."
Toward the end of 1390, Iran's became the world's 17th country in scientific development. Its scientific growth was 20 percent more than the previous year, the highest in the world.

The US Justice Department has clandestinely gained access to two months of telephone records of reporters and editors of The Associated Press in what the New York City-based news agency described as a \"massive and unprecedented intrusion.\"
The records obtained by the Justice Department comprised outgoing calls for the work and personal phone numbers of individual reporters, for general AP office numbers in New York, Washington, and Hartford, Connecticut, and for the main number for the AP in the House of Representatives press gallery. In all, the US government obtained the records for more than 20 separate phone lines designated to AP and its correspondents in April and May of 2012.
Press TV has conducted an interview with Alfred Lambremont Webre, international lawyer, about the US Justice Department gaining access to telephone records of reporters and editors of The Associated Press.

Australian officials are warning that wildfires in New South Wales could merge to create a mega-fire.

People have been warned to stay indoors and avoid exercising. A state of emergency has been declared in New South Wales since yesterday. Temperatures are expected to rise which will make firefighting more difficult. Hot and dry winds are also expected to intensify in the coming days. The bushfires that started on Thursday have caused massive damage in the Blue Mountains area. More than 200 homes have been destroyed and thousands of people forced out of their their homes. Firefighters say this is the most serious wildfire emergency in 40 years.

Protests by the anti-coup groups calling for the reinstatement of ousted President Mohamed Morsi continue in Egypt\'s universities. This comes despite violent clashes between anti-coup demonstrators and security forces as well as the army\'s supporters.
On Wednesday protests spread to Zagazig University where students rallied against disciplinary action taken by the University Administration against 4 Muslim Brotherhood students.
Violent clashes had also taken place the day before in the Delta City of Mansoura. There, Morsi\'s supporters clashed with students supporting the military. Security forces intervened to disperse the crowds by firing tear gas.
Similar clashes also took place at Cairo University but the Al Azhar University had the flashpoint of anti-coup protests and violence.
Morsi supporters staged large protests for 3 consecutive days demanding the reinstatement of the ousted president and the release of students arrested.by the security forces.
The clashes in Al Azhar University left dozens of students injured. More than 40 students were also arrested. but the Islamic Students Against the Military Coup said they would continue demonstrating against the military and the interim government untill their demands are met.
Since the start of the academic year in September, Egyptian Universities have been the scene of repeated protests and violence, which have disrupted the educational process.
Egyptian universities are among places where you can clearly see the effects of societies\' polarization between supporters of Morsi and those backing the military. If no serious reconciliation efforts are made soon, it is feared that clashes and violence could become a frequent occurrence on-campuses around the country.

Israel has revealed new plans for demolishing Palestinian homes in East Jerusalem al-Quds and the occupied West Bank.
The Jerusalem municipality has begun issuing demolition orders for buildings in the city. Most of the orders are in two neighborhoods near the Shoafat refugee camp, in the north of al-Quds and the Palestinian side of the separation fence-- namely Ras Hamis and Ras Shehada. According to Palestinian sources, demolitions will leave some 15-thousand people homeless. This comes against the backdrop of Israel\'s new plans for building some 5-thousand settler units in the occupied Palestinian territories. Israel\'s settlement activities are considered illegal under international law.

US Secretary of State John Kerry says any new sanctions on Iran would send a wrong message to the countries involved in the nuclear negotiations with Tehran.
Kerry made the remarks in a briefing to US Congressmen about the recent nuclear deal between Iran and the five permanent members of the UN Security Council plus Germany. Kerry said that new sanctions would eventually lead to the removal of all sanctions because the other negotiating partners would not follow suit. He said that decades of sanctions have failed to make any impact on the Iranian nuclear program. He added that President Barack Obama is committed and needs the help of Congress to resolve the nuclear issue, which he called QUOTE the most urgent, critical, and pressing. At one point, Kerry also said the military option against Iran is not off the table. But he stated he hopes the Iran nuclear issue can be resolved in less than six months

A new opinion poll shows that most Americans disapprove of their country\'s invasion of Afghanistan.
According to the Associated Press poll, 57 percent of Americans said the U-S move was wrong in the first place. 53 percent of the respondents also said the pace of U-S withdrawal from Afghanistan is too slow. The United States and its allies invaded Afghanistan in the wake of the nine-eleven attacks of 2001 in New York. At least three-thousand-four-hundred and four foreign troops have so far been killed in the country, nearly 23-hundred of them are American. Other polls have also shown in recent years that the war is one of the most unpopular US military expeditions abroad in American history.

Its the second day of a new round of technical talks between Iran and the permanent members of the U-N Security Council plus Germany in the Swiss city of Geneva.
Experts from the two sides began negotiations over Iran\\\\\\\'s nuclear program on Thursday. The talks follow four days of similar discussions in Vienna last week. Iran walked out of the last round after the U-S expanded its sanctions against Tehran. The added measures came as, under a landmark deal in Geneva last month, the West had promised not to slap new sanctions on Iran. Tehran says it\\\\\\\'s ready to pick up the talks after the E-U foreign policy chief, Catherine Ashton assured it that the P-five-plus-one countries, especially the U-S, would continue the negotiations in goodwill.

A new report says al-Qaeda did not carry out last year\\\'s attack on the US consulate in the Libyan city of Benghazi that killed the US ambassador.
A bomb blast targeting the mission on September 11 left four Americans including US envoy Chris Stevens dead. The US later blamed al-Qaeda-linked groups for the explosion. The report by New York Times, however, says there\\\'s been no evidence of the involvement of any international group in the attack. The investigation added that local citizens might have been behind the bombing. It added that an anti-Muslim video and rumors that guards inside the American compound had shot Libyan protesters, could have been the trigger.
