Mohammed Assaf is now the good will ambassador for Palestinian Refugees at the United Nations Relief and Works Agency. Assaf is from Gaza, and earlier this year he jumped a fence and crossed into Egypt, to enter the \"Arab Idol\" singing competition on Middle Eastern Television. At the competition, he won the title of \"Arab Idol\" for his musical abilities. Now, as someone that millions of youth in the Middle East look up to, he is championing the cause of his people who continue to suffer at the hands of Israel. Assaf pointed out that without the aid provided by the United Nations, the people of Gaza would be unable to survive.

Weeks after Iran signed a landmark deal with the permanent members of the UN Security Council plus Germany, more signs emerge that some members of the Congress are already preparing to torpedo it. Several key senators have asked intelligence officials to examine whether a new set of sanctions would derail the nuclear talks with Iran.
The request was made by the chairmen of the Senate\'s banking, intelligence, and armed services committees, and the reply should be ready in less than a week. The senators have also asked intelligence officials to provide briefings to the chamber -- once every 45 days starting on February first -- on whether Iran is complying with the deal. Some members of Congress are pushing for a new list of sanctions against Iran. But the White House is calling on senators to hold off. It says new sanctions against Iran would make Washington appear to be acting in bad faith in its nuclear outreach to Tehran.

Top Iranian officials continue to react to the latest anti-Iran sanctions by the United States. Iran\'s permanent envoy to the United Nations says the recent sanctions strengthen the suspicions about Washington\'s good intentions.
Mohammad Khazaee said the US latest move will have negative and serious effects on Iran\'s nuclear talks. He added that the talks will no longer have the support of the Iranian people as well as the international community in the wake of the recent sanctions. Two days ago, the US Treasury Department added the names of nineteen companies and individuals to its sanctions list, alleging they were helping Iran\'s nuclear program. Iranian authorities say the sanctions go against the spirit of the nuclear deal reached in Geneva last month.

Representatives from Iran and the permanent members of the UN Security Council plus Germany are in Geneva for another round of technical talks over Iran\'s nuclear program.
The talks come after four days of similar talks in Vienna last week. Iran walked out of the last round after the US expanded its sanctions against Tehran. The added measures came as, under a landmark deal in Geneva last month, the West had promised not to slap new sanctions. Tehran says it\'s ready to pick up the talks after the E-U foreign policy chief, Catherine Ashton assured it that the P-five-plus-one countries, specially the U-S, would continue the talks in goodwill. Meanwhile, France\'s Foreign Minister Laurent Fabius, who had previously blocked a deal under the influence of Israel, has already cast doubt on the chances of a final agreement in Geneva.

Ten international human rights groups have written to the United Nations about the torture of journalists in Bahrain.
The letter, signed by the Media Legal Defense Initiative and the International Federation for Human Rights, among others, has been sent to U-N special rapporteurs Frank La Rue and Juan Méndez. The rights groups have called for an investigation into the arrest, detention, and torture of Mohamed Hassan, Hussain Hubail, and Qassim Zain al-Deen. All three journalists were arrested in August and face trial on charges related to their reporting on the anti-regime demonstrations. Thousands of people, including rights activists and journalists, have been detained and tortured since the uprising began in Bahrain in 2011. Over the past three years, Manama\\\'s heavy-handed crackdown, which is being backed by Saudi forces, has killed scores of people.

Iran and the five permanent members of the UN Security Council plus Germany will start implementing the Geneva nuclear deal on January 20. Tehran says inspectors from the International Atomic Energy Agency are set to visit several nuclear sites.
The spokesman for the Atomic Energy Organization of Iran says the suspension of 20-percent uranium enrichment and the diluting of the current stockpile are Tehran\'s most important commitments under the agreement. Behruz Kamal-vandi says Iran will use centrifuges producing 20 percent enriched uranium to instead produce uranium purified to 5 percent to comply with the deal. Meanwhile, Iran\'s foreign minister Mohammad Javad Zarif has expressed hopes that implementing the deal will leave positive marks on regional and global peace and stability. He\'s voiced hope the implementation would pave the way to a final and conclusive settlement.

Iran\'s foreign ministry spokeswoman regrets the decision by UN chief to withdraw an invitation from Tehran to attend Syria peace talks.
The Iranian official said Tehran has always stressed the Syrian issue should be settled through a political solution with the participation of all Syrian people. She noted that the Syrian people\'s right to determining their own destiny should be respected, adding that imposing any plan by foreign states on Syria will not be fruitful. She noted that if Geneva 2 acts within the boundaries of realism, it can be a step in the peaceful resolution of the issue.

Iran\'s Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif says the resumed talks between Iran and the five permanent members of the UN Security Council which include the United States, Britain, France, Russia, and China plus Germany will start in good faith.
He met with the European Union foreign policy chief Catherine Ashton, who represents the P5+1 group of countries, in Vienna a day ahead of the negotiations that will take place in the city over next three days. The two sides agreed on a landmark interim deal last November in Geneva. The initial deal, which took effect in January, saw Iran curbing some of its nuclear activities in exchange for easing parts of nuclear-related sanctions.
